Merits and Flaws

All merits should provide you with a playable benefit. All flaws should provide you with a playable flaw - that does not become prohibitive to your enjoyment on Sheltering Sky.

If a merit or flaw you want, is only needed for your background and will see no play on the game, you do not need to take it.

Merits and flaws that see little benefit or use on a MU will likely be denied. These may include: blood related, smell related, some appearance related, and other merits or flaws that are prohibitive to enjoyment of a MU experience. You can app them, but they will be at Wizard discretion.

As we see it: flaws like Nightmares seem like a good idea at first - hey cool, nightmares neat! But on a MU environment, such flaws end up repetitive and prohibitive as they were never intended for daily use.

Unless you are Changeling, all merits and flaws should be Revised.

If you would like a Custom Merit or Custom Flaw, please speak to your wizard. Your wizard and godstaff will determine a) of one exists somewhere similar, b) is it something we want to see on grid and c) if so, the mechanics that will apply. Be aware, you are unlikely to get exactly what you are looking for as we look at the merits and flaws from a different perspective.

There is a limit to the number of merits you can take. No character may start with more than 7 points in merits. If your wizard approves, you may start with more than 7 points in flaws. However, you only get the first 7 in freebie points.

House Rules

Medium We use two levels of the Medium merit.

Medium - 2 points You have an affinity with the Shadowlands. Your can hear denizens (denizens means anyone in the Shadowlands, be they wraith/mage/shifter/demon/mummy/etc..) of the Shadowlands naturally. You can not see these entities without the right magic, but they do tend to hang out, talk, bug the character and ask him to do things. This talent can be helpful in some cases; wraiths are eager to talk to those who can hear them. However, they often make demands, and they can be difficult to banish.

Medium - 3 points You have a strong connection to the denizens of the Shadowlands. You can see and hear entities in the Shadowlands naturally. This means you can see/hear wraiths/mages/shifters/changelings/etc... any entity that is in the local Shadowlands. You can not see the Shadowlands themselves. Wraiths and other entities may attempt to hang out, talk, bug your character and ask him to do things. This talent can be helpful in some cases; wraiths are eager to talk to those who can hear them. However, they often make demands, and they can be difficult to banish if you don't have the right skill set to do so.

Mute This flaw will only carry a 2 pt flaw value, despite the book having it as 4. The books were written before a large number of readily available devices were around. Phones that you can rapidly type into that speak for you are very prolific and negate a lot of the difficulty in communication someone would have experienced 15+ years ago.
